During the beginning of the raining season in Nicaragua, the waters off the coast of some northern mangrove estuaries teem with hawksbill sea turtles.

During the tour you’ll trying to have the chance to see a sea turtles laying their eggs. Visitors will learn about the life cycle of sea turtles — only 1 in 1,000 sea turtles makes it to adulthood — which is part of why protecting their nesting environment is so essential to their survival.

Estero Padre Ramos Nature Reserve hosts the largest concentration of nesting hawksbill sea turtles in eastern Pacific.

From May to late August, nightly tours are available to take you out to see these fascinating marine creatures heaving their way up the beach. If you hope to see the little hatchlings, visit between July and November.

Sos Nicaragua visits the hawksbill nesting area and hatchery with permission from the Fauna & Flora International who request that turtle observation is conducted in accordance with the Turtle Watching Code of Conduct.  In accordance with these guidelines, all observation is managed by guides qualified in sea turtle biology;

Participants on the tour must wear dark clothing and refrain from using flash cameras to avoid disturbing the turtles.

If you are coordinating same day transportation to take any tour, please contact our office for estimated tour departure and return times before booking your shuttle tickets. Some hike tours are subjected to time changes as we adjust for the seasons. Tour timings are also subject to traffic conditions.

This tour is conducted around the tide cycle – high tide and mid tide up are the best times to see the turtles. Nature dictates your experience and return time – the females usually come up during the night, although there are no guarantees. The tour will return later if babies are hatching. Note that nesting turtles or hatchlings cannot be guaranteed on any tour though in 2017 70% of our guests experienced a sea turtle encounter.

This tour is not advised for people who are pregnant, or who have existing neck or back injury. Sos Nicaragua reserves the right to cancel or vary trips subject to weather or sea conditions.

SOS NICARAGUA is family friendly however this adventure is not suited to children under the age of 6.
